22 December 2023, Indonesia – Musim Mas, a leading integrated palm oil company, clinched 11 awards at the prestigious PROPER (Program Penilaian Peringkat Kinerja Perusahaan dalam Pengelolaan Lingkungan Hidup) Awards on December 21, 2023. The awards mark a significant milestone as PROPER expands its recognition of positive environmental performance that goes beyond regulatory requirements. The expansion now encompasses mill facilities and excellence in plantation estates.

The PROPER Awards ceremony, extended by invitation to over 3,000 companies, celebrated outstanding achievements in environmental performance across various industries in Indonesia. Musim Mas’s success in the palm oil sector highlights its dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable business practices.

Initiated by the Indonesia Ministry of Environment and Forestry, PROPER is an assessment program designed to enhance environmental compliance and excellence among businesses operating in Indonesia. While traditionally focused on mill operations, this year’s addition of a dedicated category for plantation estates underscores the growing importance of holistic sustainability practices.

The PROPER assessment comprehensively evaluates various processes, covering lifecycle assessment, energy efficiency, emission reduction, water efficiency, wastewater load reduction, B3 waste reduction, utilization of non-B3 waste, biodiversity protection, community empowerment, and disaster responses. B3 waste typically refers to hazardous waste, encompassing materials that pose potential risks to human health and the environment, often including chemicals, solvents, and heavy metals.

Musim Mas uses solid, liquid, and gas waste management to implement zero waste. Solid waste is further managed into fuel and fertilizer, liquid waste is controlled through a water treatment process to be reused, and waste methane gas produced from operational processes is managed into electricity using the Methane Capture installation. Currently, 17 of Musim Mas’ mills are equipped with methane capture facilities, and the electricity output is used for operations and employees at the operational locations of Musim Mas’ plantations and mills.

With the introduction of the Estates category, the assessment criteria include a thorough examination of peatland management within estates, such as the peatland ecosystem damage control, encompassing elements like protection, inventory and mapping, prevention and maintenance, mitigation and recovery of pollution and damage, and ongoing monitoring of peat ecosystems.

Central to the PROPER Awards is a five-color-coded assessment rating scheme – Gold, Green, Blue, Red, and Black – representing the environmental performance of participating companies, with Gold and Green recognizing those that surpass legal requirements with exemplary best practices and Black indicating the lowest level of performance.

Highlighting Musim Mas’s prominence at the PROPER Awards, multiple subsidiaries secured accolades this year. 11 mills under the Group’s umbrella, including PT Siringo-Ringo, PT Indomakmur Sawit Berjaya, PT Agrowiratama, PT Sinar Agro Raya, PT Musim Mas PKS Batang Kulim, PT Musim Mas PKS Pangkalan Lesung, PT Berkat Sawit Sejati, PT Sukajadi Sawit Mekar PKS SSM1, PT Sukajadi Sawit Mekar PKS SSM2, PT Maju Aneka Sawit, and PT Unggul Lestari, swept up the Green PROPER Awards among 303 candidates. Additionally, the Group achieved nine “PROPER Biru” (Blue Category) ranking, distributed among two subsidiary mills and seven plantations. The Blue Category meant Musim Mas has fully complied with the government regulations. This recognition underscores the comprehensive dedication of Musim Mas to sustainability, reaching every facet of its operations. The company has consistently received PROPER awards since 2018, a testament to its ongoing commitment to environmental excellence.

“At Musim Mas, we are honored to receive recognition at the PROPER Awards, a testament to our unwavering commitment to sustainable practices. These achievements affirm our dedication to sustainable excellence and reflect the collective efforts of our team. We will continue to strive to improve our sustainability performance.”, said Teuku Kanna Rhamdan, Musim Mas’ General Manager of Corporate Affairs.
