Our Certifications and Verifications

Musim Mas strives to conform to the most stringent sustainability standards. We aim to ensure that our operations which are directly owned and managed are compliant with leading palm oil certification standards, schemes and benchmarks.

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a multi-stakeholder organization that has developed a certification scheme for sustainable palm oil. All RSPO members must comply with the RSPO Principles and Criteria (P&C), a set of stringent standards governing sustainable palm oil production. The RSPO aims to promote the growth and use of responsibly sourced palm oil.

In 2012, Musim Mas was Indonesia’s first palm oil major to achieve 100% certification for all plantations and palm oil mills against the RSPO P&C. Since then, new acquisitions have been made. We currently have 18 mills, of which 15 are integrated with plantations certified.  As of June 2021, all 15 integrated palm oil mills are RSPO-certified.

The Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) is the mandatory national sustainable palm oil standard in Indonesia, adopted by Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture. ISPO strives to improve the competitiveness of the Indonesian palm oil globally, as well as promote the production of sustainable palm oil.

Musim Mas was one of the first companies to undergo the ISPO certification process, with two mills being awarded the ISPO certificate in 2012. As of December 2022, 15 out of 17 entities are ISPO-certified.

The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is an international certification program for sustainable biomass and bioenergy production, established under the European Renewable Energy Directive (EU RED) 2009. Certification requirements include criterion on GHG emissions savings, sustainable use of land, protection of natural biospheres and social sustainability.

Musim Mas has achieved 100% certification against the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) for all upstream operations and mills.

The Palm Oil Innovation Group (POIG) is a voluntary initiative developed jointly by NGOs and companies. POIG aims to facilitate innovations that encourage the adoption of responsible palm oil production practices. The group has developed a credible and verifiable benchmark that builds upon the RSPO standards.

Musim Mas was the first Southeast Asian palm oil major to become a Palm Oil Innovation Group (POIG) member in 2015. We achieved independent verification and compliance with the POIG Charter and its indicators as of February 2019. We are also proud to be the first company in Southeast Asia to supply POIG verified oil.

PROPER is an initiative by Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry to improve the environmental performance of companies in Indonesia. Companies are assessed for their processes in lifecycle assessment, energy efficiency, emission reduction, water efficiency, wastewater load reduction, reduction of hazardous and toxic wastes, reduction and utilization of non hazardous and toxic wastes, biodiversity protection, community empowerment, and disaster responses. Since 2021, the assessment criteria also included vaccination programs that are part of the disaster response to support government initiatives.

The Musim Mas Group was awarded 11 Green PROPER Awards in 2021 which represents standards “beyond the environmental compliance criteria.”

Musim Mas adheres to the Italian National Scheme Certification for the sustainability of biofuels and bioliquids, and all our mills have achieved compliance with it as of April 2018. The certification demonstrates our compliance with its sustainability criteria, and that the environmental and social information provided by operators within the production chain is reliable.
