September 2018

Greenpeace also published a report titled, “Final Countdown: Now or Never to Reform the Palm Oil Industry”, alleging that Indonusa:

  1. Has not obtained all necessary permits for the following concessions:
    • One concession in South Sorong, West Papua
    • Two established concessions in Sumatra (managed by PT Indonusa Agromulia and PT Hamita Utama Karsa)
    • 18,590 ha concession in Merauke, Papua (managed by PT Internusa Jaya Sejahtera)
  2. In 2012, bought a third Sumatran plantation company, Sawit Mas Perkasa in Jambi, whose previous owner had cleared land for timber but had not planted oil palm
  3. Possibly have other concessions (not publicly listed) controlled by the group, as its website claims that it is expanding in Sumatra, Kalimantan and Papua
  4. Internusa Jaya Sejahtera (IJS) cleared around 5,170 hectares of forest, including Primary Forest between 25 January 2015 and 28 July 2018, despite not having been granted a definitive State Forest Release Letter.
Musim Mas engaged with Indonusa to get clarification on claims raised by Mighty Earth and Greenpeace regarding on the forest clearance in Internusa Jaya Sejahtera (IJS), in the province of Papua.

Musim Mas met with representatives from Indonusa to find out more about the case as well as discuss potential mitigation measures in the near- to long-term. Indonusa explained that they have measures and SOPs relating to the NDPE Policy in place.

Indonusa expressed willingness to commit to Musim Mas’ sustainability standards, and to improve their sustainability policies and practices. In their reply to us, they stated that they are in-compliance with Indonesian Plantation laws and have all the necessary permits in place. They also gave assurances that sound sustainability practices in place however no action plan has been forthcoming.
October 2018 Musim Mas reviewed the latest response from Indonusa and deemed Indonusa to be less than enthusiastic in revealing the action plan.

Since then, we have made an internal decision and concluded not to continue the business relationship with Indonusa and our last purchase was in September 2018.

November 2018 – January 2019 Since then, Mighty Earth has released several reports of forest clearance in the Papua province between November 2018 – January 2019, which you may refer to below:
