Musim Mas Group Welcomes the Reinstatement of Nestlé’s Membership by Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)
Singapore – Musim Mas Group welcomes the reinstatement of Nestlé’s membership by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) on 16 July 2018.
The reinstatement came three weeks after Nestlé was suspended by RSPO for breaching the RSPO Code of Conduct. Nestlé failed to submit a plan detailing how it would ensure the use of certified Palm Oil in its ACOP (Annual Communication on Progress) report, a mandatory annual report required of RSPO members. Nestlé was also behind on paying its membership fee.
Following the submission of its report, RSPO then moved to reinstate the membership of Nestlé, allowing Nestlé to return to RSPO, the most recognised platform for the transformation of the Palm Oil industry. “As Gandhi once said, be the change you want the see in the world,” said Carolyn Lim, Musim Mas Corporate Communications Manager. “Nestlé cannot maintain moral high ground in initiating any industry-wide transformation without first fixing their breaches. We are glad that Nestlé has made good its RSPO membership obligation.”
For years, RSPO provides an avenue for various stakeholders to work together towards the development and implementation of global standards for sustainable Palm Oil . “In this context, we believe RSPO is still the best platform,” said Teong Kwee Lim, Musim Mas Director of Strategy and Planning. “RSPO represents more than a decade of hard work of the full-fledged, multi-stakeholder process. Second-party alternatives that lack independence, oversight and transparency are not constructive. We welcome the return of Nestlé and look forward to work together with them actively within the RSPO framework.”
